Qilu Network · Shandian News, January 18 – This afternoon, the Shandong Provincial Government Information Office held a press conference to introduce the overall foreign trade situation of Shandong in 2020 and answered questions from reporters. According to the conference, Shandong's agricultural product exports in 2020 amounted to 125.74 billion yuan, a 1.9% increase from 2019. The exports accounted for 23.9% of the national total, an increase of 1.1 percentage points compared to the previous year, setting a new historical high. This marks the 22nd consecutive year Shandong has ranked first in the country.
Zhang Yibing, Deputy Director of Jinan Customs, introduced that, in terms of export markets, Shandong exported 40.7 billion yuan of agricultural products to countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative, a 13.9% increase, accounting for 32.4% of the total export value. Exports to ASEAN countries totaled 25.54 billion yuan, an increase of 17.6%. At the same time, Shandong’s agricultural exports to Japan, the EU (excluding the UK), and South Korea were 28.38 billion yuan, 14.9 billion yuan, and 12.97 billion yuan, respectively, decreasing by 7.1%, 7.1%, and 4.8%. Exports to the U.S. reached 11 billion yuan, an increase of 9%.
In terms of specific products, vegetables, aquatic products, fresh and dried fruits, and nuts were the main exports. Vegetable exports totaled 30.26 billion yuan, increasing by 4.9%; aquatic product exports were 29.66 billion yuan, down 15.3%; and exports of fresh and dried fruits and nuts reached 14 billion yuan, a 40.5% increase. Together, these three categories accounted for 58.8% of the total agricultural product export value.
Zhang Yibing stated that the growth in Shandong's agricultural exports was primarily due to two reasons. On the one hand, the high-quality development of Shandong agriculture provided a solid foundation for the growth of agricultural product exports. In 2020, the production of grain, meat, aquatic products, fruits, and vegetables in Shandong continued to rank among the top in the country. Additionally, with the accelerated construction of the province’s modern agricultural industrial system, Shandong's agricultural product quality and safety standards were also ahead of the national average. The dual improvement in quantity and quality ensured the scale and benefits of agricultural product exports. On the other hand, the diversification of international markets further opened up the export prospects for Shandong’s agricultural products. In 2020, Shandong agricultural product exporters overcame the impacts of the pandemic, quickly resumed work and production, and particularly saw a significant increase in exports to countries along the "Belt and Road," which contributed a 4% increase in the province’s total agricultural product exports.
“Moving forward, with the signing of the RCEP free trade agreement, Shandong’s agricultural exports will face even broader market prospects,” Zhang Yibing said.
